Alice Mae Mathis

Alice Mae Mathis, age 96 of Karnak, Illinois passed away at 3:45 P.M. Thursday, April 3, 2025 at her home.

Alice Mae was born August 10, 1928 in Karnak. She attended Karnak School and graduated from Karnak High School in 1946. Her parents were Frank and Lula Spindler.

She met and fell in love with George Mathis from Cypress. After he was in the armed forces they were married on August 6, 1949. Soon after they were married they were converted at the West Eden Church and joined the Karnak Methodist Church while Rev. Carl Davis was the pastor.

Alice Mae retired from Century School in 1978 where she was employed as secretary for 20 years. On January 21, 1991 George passed away at age 63. God provided some good traveling companions, she loved to travel. Her hobbies were collecting old Avon bottles, Avon Christmas Plates and Barbie Dolls. She was a member of the Shawnee Homemakers. Alice Mae enjoyed staying active in the Karnak Methodist Church and had been treasure of the Methodist Women. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable garden. She had lived in Karnak for 74 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Darla (Russell) Nekorchuk of Gainesville, Florida, Denise Boroviac of Mount Juliet, Tennessee; two grandchildren Dawn Nekorchuk of Seattle, Washington, Michael (Kat) Nekorchuk of Beaverton, Oregon; two great-grandchildren, Neil Busman-Sahay of Beaverton, Oregon and Marie Nekorchuk of Beaverton, Oregon; special neice and caregivers, Dorothy Little, Elaine Wright and Jeff Jordan; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; caregivers of Patties Caring Angels.

Alice Mae was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, two brothers, Leo and David Spindler.

Funeral services honoring the life of Mrs. Alice Mae Mathis will be held at 1 P.M. Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at the Karnak Methodist Church. Rev. Steve Heisner will be officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 11A.M. till the service hour at the Church. Interment will follow at the Cypress Cemetery.
